We believe in mechanical beauty
The Craft Behind ALPA - Part I

At ALPA, every camera is more than the sum of its parts. Behind each meticulously crafted element lies the work of human hands, guided by decades of experience, patience, and pride. In this series, we introduce the people who shape our cameras. Not just with tools, but with passion. From wood to leather to metal, they each bring an eye for detail and a respect for material that defines our mechanical philosophy.
PART 1: Irène Meier – Leather Works
For over four decades, Irène Meier has been shaping leather – and being shaped by it. As ALPA’s long-time leather specialist, she’s responsible for the exceptional hand straps and accessories that carry not just function, but feeling.

“Good leather tells you who it is — you just have to listen.” – Irène Meier
"I’ve been working with leather for over four decades, and I still discover something new in every hide. It’s a living material, with character, strength, and memory. That’s why I prefer authentic leathers. Ones that show their natural grain and grow more beautiful with time. I don’t believe in mass-produced, embossed surfaces. Real quality doesn’t need disguise."
Irène works only with authentic, full-grain leathers. Never embossed, never disguised. Each hide is treated with care, revealing its natural character. The results are straps that age beautifully, tell their own story, and bring quiet luxury to the hand that holds them.

At her workbench everything is done manually. No rush. No shortcuts. For Irène, craftsmanship is about integrity. Not perfection for perfections sake, but emotional truth you can feel in your palm.
"Working with ALPA allows me to use traditional techniques and machines in a way that respects the material. Every cut, every stitch, every finish is done by hand, with full attention. And because the editions are small, there’s room for care. That’s what I love most: creating something precise, durable, and honest."

Whether it’s the green lamb nappa lining of the new Edition Pignons models, or the rugged black cowhide exterior, Irène’s handstraps are as much about tactile honesty as they are about comfort. They don’t ask for attention, they earn it.
"After more than 20 years with ALPA, I still take pride in every piece that leaves my bench. It’s not about perfection in the industrial sense. It’s about integrity. When you hold one of these accessories, you’re not just feeling leather. You’re feeling the way it was treated, the time it was given, and the respect it was made with."
